DJ timecode demo: one deck runs the lasers, lights and visuals
Rekordbox plays the track. TimecodeLink turns the deck position into timecode, and the whole rig follows it.
What you're watching
The video shows the TimecodeLink window following a Rekordbox deck, next to the rig it drives. Pangolin BEYOND runs the lasers, Resolume Arena plays the visuals and QLC+ runs the lights, all on the same timecode.
The show was programmed once against the track. From then on the DJ drives it: play, pitch, cue or scratch, and everything moves with the music.
The rig
- Lasers: a Unity RAW 3W, driven by Pangolin BEYOND over Art-Net
- Visuals: an ordinary TV on HDMI from Resolume Arena
- Lights: budget DMX fixtures through an Art-Net node
You don't need a club rig for this. If your software can chase timecode, it can follow the DJ.
With your own setup
The demo uses Rekordbox. CDJ/XDJ players work the same way, and so do Serato, VirtualDJ and Denon, which are in beta. TimecodeLink sends the timecode as MTC, Art-Net or SMPTE LTC. grandMA3 works too, and TimecodeLink has also been tested with ChamSys MagicQ.
For tempo, it shares BPM over Ableton Link and OSC and can drive grandMA2 and grandMA3 speed masters.
Build it yourself
- Rekordbox setup: connect Rekordbox the way the demo does
- Example setups: IPs and ports for a CDJ rig with Resolume and BEYOND
- grandMA3 timecode: the same idea on a grandMA3
- On YouTube: the full video and the vertical Short
